These photographs tell the story of women who were oppressed by their partners; women who should have been loved and respected, but were instead mistreated, devalued, and reduced to roles of servitude within their families. They also reflect the sacrifices undertaken by countless women in society. Yet, I choose to believe that these women can create their own happy endings, turn over a new leaf, and find the confidence to stand up for themselves.
अग्नि परीक्षा
(Agni Pareeksha – Fire Test to prove chastity)
These photographs are inspired by my culture; more specifically, the mythological story of the Ramayan. After Sita was captured by Ravan and later rescued by Ram, she was forced to walk through fire (Agni) to prove her chastity. This narrative resonates with real life, as many women today are blamed for being assaulted and unjustly deemed ‘impure.’ They are not only held responsible for the misdeeds of others but are also compelled to justify their very existence.
